HS Humanities - History & Literature
Mondays 9:00am - 10:30am
Ages 14-18/Grades 9-12

This integrated study of Literature and History includes topics and skills that meet high school Standards for both English 9-12 and World History.  This course is estimated to require approximately 6-8 hours per week, including class meeting times, but can vary depending on the individual student’s skills & ability and familiarity with the topics.  This course can be completed as independent study with guidance from a parent or tutor, or implemented in a group learning environment, either live online or in person.  This course is broken into 30 lessons. Each lesson is intended to take 1 week to complete, with students spending 1-2 hours in group class or guided instruction and an additional 4-6 hours on independent learning (approximately 1-2 hours per "school day" engaged in this course).  Reminder: This course is equivalent to 2 full high school courses, and so requires more time than a single high school course.  However, it takes less time than studying History and English as separate subjects, and students retain more of the learning from integrating various topics and applying skills in both areas. If taught in a group class, we recommend meeting 1-2 times each "school" week, for 60-90 minutes total per week (1 meeting per week for 90 minutes or 2 meetings per week for 45-60 minutes).  If group classes meet twice per week, divide each lesson into 2 parts to be covered over both classes.  Students will learn World History, from Ancient Greece through 21st-Century global issues, while reading literature from or about corresponding historical eras. This deepens understanding of both the Literature and History, increasing student engagement and retention.  This approach to learning also builds critical thinking skills and integration of various knowledge and skills, while applying what is learned to the students’ current lives, issues, and modern-day events and ideas.
